The Public Works Department has approved the plans and proposals for tlie new bridge at Waikukupa crossing, on the road to Welieka. The bridge material has been ordered, and it is hoped to have tire new structure ready for the bulk of tbe summer traffic. It will cost about £2,400 and funds are being provided out of flood damage grant. Provision for improving the W'a'iho-Welieka road is being made on the Public Works Estimates. The matter of bridging Docherty Creek on tbe same route, is also under consideration.
The Minister Tor Health, replying to a question on the subject of goitre prevention in the House of Representatives, said that tbe Department bynewspaper articles and public addresses has endeavoured to impress upon the public generally the desirability of using iodised salt, especially in endemic areas. In addition, school medical officers, in the course of medical examination of school children, have made a practice of advising parents of children suffering from goitre, even in a minor degree, that the use of iodised salt Is desirable. Evidence the Department has shows that an increasing use is being made of this salt, and that in endemnic areas a very considerable proportion of the salt used is of this nature.

Captain Ingram leaves by the express to-morrow morning to join the auxiliary scow Zingara. The vessel is timed to leave Wellington for Hokitika on Wednesday morning and should arrive in Hokitika on Thursday afternoon.

The Juvenile Ball in the Soldiers’ Hall, last evening, tendered by the local Combined Hockey Clubs, was, ns the ball on the previous evening, a pronounced success. The juveniles attended iri large numbers, and enjoyed themselves thoroughly. The arrangements made w'ere most complete, the assemblage present being highly satisfied. The .music was voluntary and the dance wont with a lively swing the whole evening.
At the meeting of the Highways Council at Greymouth on AVednesday, the matter of meeting quarterly was left in the hands of the Chairman, as also the selection of the place for meeting. The idea was put forward that the meeting should be held in the different centres of the several counties concerned, so that members could glean some general knowledge of local loonditioiis in regard to the maintenance and upkeep of the main highways under local control.
AVe deeply regret having made an error yesterday in the announcement of a death at AVcstland Hospital. The name of the deceased was Samuel Arnericli, not Paul Americh, as stated.. Mr Samuel Americh, who is a cousin of Mr Paul Americh, was also n miner in the Goldsborough district over a long period of veal's. He was a native of Austria and 77 years of age, of which 50 years had been spent in New Zealand. He leaves a wife, who is living ill Otago, hut they had no children by the marriage, which took place at Kumara.
“Occupiers of shops in Christchurch may not he aware that it is now necessary that every shop selling smokers’ requisites must close and observe the same open, hours ns tobacconists,” said Mr P. TI. Lawrv, S.M., during the hearing of cases at Christchurch on AVednesday. “/Shopkeepers must also notify the Inspector of Factories that they deal in cigarettes. This, of course is the most unusual feature of the Gazette notice. Shopkeepers who sell cigarettes had better note that they will ho liable to a penalty if they sell cigarettes without notifying tile inspector. The Act requires immediate notification.”
A sharp advance was recorded in tile price of fat cattle at the weekly stock sale at Addington on AVednesday. This was due largely to the fact that the entry was a small one, numbering only 358 head. They met with a keen demand throughout, the rise in values ranging from 20s to 40s a head. Primo heavy fat sheep met with a. good inquiry from butchers, ami sold even a little better than they did last week, but owing to lack of buying by the exporters lighter sorts wore cheaper. The decline in light ewes was from Is Is Gd a head. A small entry of store sheep sold under satisfactory competition, late rates being fully maintained. with prices showing an improvement in some cases. The store cattle forward consisted of a few pens of cows which sold at about late rates. Little interest was taken in the sale of dairy cattle, and prices for thorn wore again easier. The number of vealers forward was not nearly sufficient to meet iroquirelmontsf and tboy sold .under very keen competition. Baeoners improved slightly, and porkers were firm at last week’s values. There was a satisfactory demand for store pigs.
