WESTLAND PROGRESS LEAGUE
EXECUTIVE MEETING. Tlie Executive of the above League met at the County Chambers at 7.40 o’clock last evening. Present: Dr Tciclielmann (President), Alessrs AY. Wilson, T. W. Duff, W. E. Richards, Dew, 1). J. Evans, W. Jeffries and J. W. Morris. Apologies were received for tho absence of Alessrs Butler, Bruce Mclntosh and Pilkington. The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed. Air Dow, who replaced All- Craw on tho Executive, was welcomed by the President. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE.
From Postmaster regarding inter-Ts-laml telephone service, explaining that Hokitika was not. within range, but the Telephone Inspector was looking into tlie matter, and when the equipment was available, the requirement of tlie town would lie attended to.—Received.
It was stated a similar reply had been given Air Seddon in the House, and lie had pointed out that as the distance beyond Greymouth was only some 25 miles, Hokitika could hardly be out of range, in fact bearing was as good. From AY. Goss, Christchurch, agreeing to act as League representative on the Canterbury Progress League.—Received with thanks.
From E. James, Afakaroa, asking for illustrated booklets to distribute to tourists.—Received, supply to bo sent. From Tourist Bureau, Dunedin, asking for supply of booklets and stating as a result of the visit of the Otago farmers to the district, increased tourist traffic to AA’estland was likely to result.—Received. It was resolved to have 500 copies of the booklet sent to Wellington and 150 copies to Dunedin. From Ala rl bo rough League, copy of minutes, and action regarding mail service to the Coast, over tlie Top110use route.—Received. Mr Jeffries mentioned bo would cross by the Tophouse route next week, where it~~was expected to cover the trip from Hokitika to Blenheim in a day. From Canterbury Progress League, forwarding copy of minutes and stating action in regard to AA’ost Coast coastal road.—Received.
From Railway Department notifying alterations in railway time-table in express service from Canterbury.—Received and approved. A discussion ensued with regard to a quicker train service on express days between Greymouth and Hokitika, and it was resolved to ask for a revision of the timetable in that direction. In tlie course of the discussion it was stated that there was general complaint about the protracted delays and as a consequence a disposition ,fon- through passengers to use motor transport more. It was said that one objection was tlie difficulty about cutting out stops on the numerous wayside stations, and to counteract that it was thought more use for passenger traffic should bo made of the mid-day train. The discussion indicated that the need for an improyement in the local service was greatly in demand. From AYcokly Press, Christchurch, regarding advertising the district in the Christmas Number.—Received and referred to Dr Teiehelmann, Air Evans and Mr Atoms to act. The matter of applying for improved mail services to AVaiho and AVeheka was referred to the President and the Secretary. Tho meeting rose at 8.30 p.m.
