LATE LOCALS.
The Westport News says -.—Whitebait are beginning to move pretty freely in the Duller river, but prices are still over the odds for the breakfast table. It is expected that this will be a very good season. Afost of the fish caught in the meantime, finds its way when boats are sailing suit, to the big vrmtrea, where whitebait is eagerly purchased, no matter how much the purchasers have to pay for it.
On Alondav afternoon, a visitor, accompanied by the Chief Engineer of the s.s. Tees, had a narrow escape from a most serious accident at Westport, says the “News.” In liis Nash sedan, the visitcV crossed the railway line to the Crane Wharf and then noticed a rake of trucks coming down. The driver attempted to reverse, hut the engine unaccountably failed to act and the rake came down on the car. Fortunately, the buffer of the leading truck was over the running board, and instead of knocking the car over, the truck swept it standing down the line for about fifty yards, when the rake was pulled up. Needless to say. the car was badly damaged in the back wheel, the running hoard and some other parts, but escaped lightly from a very serious situation. Tho occupants escaped scathlessly.
