Pedestrians in the vicinity of the intersection of Mackay and Tainui .Streets, Groymouth, were somewhat alarmed about 5.15 p.m. yesterday, by the erratic course taken by a motor truck, which after colliding with a cyclist near the middle of the road, crashed into a verandah post adjoining the premises of James Kyle, tailor, of Tainui Street. The cyclist who “was an employee of the Afawhera Meat Company, was thrown across the mudguard of the motor truck, and his cycle was caught up under the radiator, dashed against the kerb and verandah post and reduced to scrap iron. The cyclist was severely shaken and bruised but after receiving medical attention was able to proceed home. The possible extent of his injuries has not yet been ascertained. The driver of the motor vehicle, John S. a miner, 'of Bunanga, escaped without injury, and the truck a one ton Ford, was only slightly damaged. Reserved decision was given by Air. AA'. Meld rum, S.M., at Greymouth on Monday in the case heard last week in which Edward McAlavey and Joseph Devine (Air J. AA r . Hannan) were charged with keeping open the Aliners’ Hall, Bunanga, on Sunday, April 15th, for the purpose of a picture entertainment. It has been proved, said the Magistrate, that the whole of the takings, with the exception of the cost of the hall and film, were paid into a separate benevolent fund which was used for the purpose of relieving distress in the Bunanga district. “That, to my mind,” he continued, “brings the case under Subsection 3 of Section 18 of tlie Police Offences Act, 1927. which says that ‘nothing in the foregoing provisions shall apply to works of necessity or charity.’ There is no question in this ease that the whole of the net takings are devoted to charity. That lining so, tlie case comes within the exception, and therefore no offence has been committed. The ease is dismissed.” Start collecting Raven Tea coupons to-day and win a big cash prize.
