FIERCE FIGHT IN A JEWELLER’S. NEWCASTLE, June 5. As the result of an encounter with intruders early this morning in the premises of Hessrs Reid, jewellers, Blnckett-street, Newcustle-on-Tyne, a, policeman is lying seriously injured in Newcastle Infirmary and another Is injured but at duty. Three men believed to he strangers to Newcastle, have been arrested. One of them is an alien. Just before 2 a.m., Detective Charles Brown and Police-Constable William Marlowe, having had their suspicions aroused, passed through the offices above the jeweller’s shop. Arriving at the showroom, Detective Brown switched on the lights, hut they were immediately switched off and a man tried to fell him. Tie avoided the blow and then a struggle began in the dark with at least throe men and possibly four. The officers drew their truncheons and the intruders used jemmies. At last Detective Brown got clear and switched on the lights again. The ' fight was then carried to! the landing. P C. Marlowe was struck down with a jemmy and Detective Brown had the truncheon knocked out of his hand, but ho got the truncheon from P.C-. Marlowe's wrist and hit one of 1 the men on the head. P.C. COLLAPSES. This man and two others then dashed away through the showroom. One | got. a way through the window and the other two hv the stairs. Detective Brown and P.C. Marlowe followed, hut the latter collapsed. ‘ With the aid of civilians and another policeman two men were arrested . A remarkable collection of tools of all kinds was left behind and the nlncc was splashed with blood.
