Tho Chinese treaty of war is now definitely in progress. The Italian Consul-General, Galanti, to-day’ issued a statement announcing it was well that everyone in China should know a Sino-italian had not lapsed. In consequence of the illegal unilateral declaration by the Nanking Government the Italian Government reserves the right to adopt such measures as it deems opportune, in case of violation of the treaty, though naturally ready to meet the Chinese desires foi treaty revision.

Fighting broke out on Sunday night at Chefoo when General Dzungdjinkao, formerly Commander of Changcliungchia.ng’s bodyguard recently, posting Nationalists, attacked forces under Colonel Sze at midnight continuing firing till four in the morning and isolating Consular Hill in an attempt to establish communication between Consulates" and foreign warships. An American sailor was wounded in the hand by’ a stray’ bullet.

To-day DzungUjinkao posters announced he was acting under orders of Chaugclmngehiang who is expected in Chefoo in a few days. Tho American Consul demanded an investigation by r Chinese authorities while British and Japanese Consuls demanded naval protection.
