KYEBURN MURDER

ACCUSED BEFORE COURT

DUNEDIN, July 20.

As a result of a ceaseless vigil in Dunedin on the part of the detectives concerned in the search for the murderer of the Chinese gold-miner, Jo Slven, who was shot to death at Kychurn on Tuesday, William John Hardio was accosted yesterday morning and taken to the police station, being detained as a suspect. When it was learned that two ounces of gold, corresponding to the amount of gold taken from Jo'Shell's hut, had been sold to a bank in Ranl'urlyi, descriptions of the man responsible were circulated, and it was discovered that' a man answering to the description had been seen to hoard the express at Ranfurly for Dunedin on Wednesday morning. This man turned out to he Hardio who, when detectives hoarded the train-at Caversluim, hid in a lavatory until the train commenced to move off, and then alighted and took refuge in the city. His period of liberty was not destined to be long, however, for lie was seen and recognised in Cumberland street yesterday morning. On word being received of Hardic'f detention .in Dunedin, Sue Pee, an employee of the dead Chinese, was immediately motored from the Kyeburn •diggings for the purpose of attending the identification parade this morning. During the pa,rack, however, Pec was apparently labouring under such strong fear of the man that lie could not be induced to point him out directly, and it was finally found necessary, to get Pee to identify flardie, by giving his position in the rank. Hafdie was then formally arrested and shortly afterwards appeared in the Magistrate's Court before Mr Bundle, ,S.M., and was charged with murder. He was remanded for eight days.
