CHINESE TROUBLE

Australian Press Assn.—United Service CHINA’S STAND. SHANGHAI, July 20. Special interim regulations governing the relations of China, with the foreign countries with which treaties have expired will be drafted by the Nationalist Government. The latter recently informed the powers that all China-for-eign treaties must lie reviewed on terms of equality.

Already the Spanish, Portugal, Italian, Danish and Japanese comfnereial treaties have expired. In instancing tne Chinese determination tp enforce a revision, this afternoon a Chinese judge ordered from his court an Italian Consular deputy who was watching the appeal, of a Greek who was sentenced to fifteen years for robbery. The judge based his authority on the expiration of the CliineseItalinn treaty, and informed the Deputy that lie was no longer an extraterritorial foreigner. This announcement was received with dismay. It was generally believed that China would allow the Italians to maintain their former status, pending the revision'of the Chinese-Italian treaty.

Diplomatic intervention 'is being sought. The removal of extra-jterritor-ial rights will he the signal for an exodus of foreigners from China, which is believed to be the aim of Hie Nationalists.
