STUD SHEEP

A PROPOSED TAX

AUCKLAND, July 17

Two well-known Canterbury sheep breeders, Messrs H. T. Little and N. D. Campbell ,returned by the Mamma to-day from Sydney, where they visited the ltoyal Show.

“It has been proposed to put a tax of £2 2s each on New Zealand stud fiook sheep which have not been passed by the inspector and tattooed when they arrive in Australia,” said Mr Little. Tie stated that British breeds of New Zealand sheep sent to Australia are very much in demand and nre of much better quality than those bred in the Commonwealth.

“A large proportion of the New Zealand sheep sent over for the show should never- have gone,” said Mr Little, “as they are not the best wo can produce. That is one of the reasons why the £2 2s tax lias been proposed. Such action would be in the interests of breeders in Australia. All the Corriedales art branded, and it I would be a good thing for New Zea- | land if this were done here.” Mr Little mentioned that Mr Donald Grant, of Tiniaru, obtained seven-ty-five guineas for the champion Border , Leicester ewes which he sent over for- the show. Australians produce fine quality merinos, he said, but New Zealand more than holds her own with British breeds, such as Romneys, Border Leicesters and Corriedales.
