RATE NOTICES ISSUED. WELLINGTON, July 20. The City Council has just issued the annual rate notices and general consternation is expressed at the manner in which they have jumped up as much as £7 or more on properties of moderate values. The Mayor explains this is the result of a recent poll, when it was decided that all rating should be on an unimproved value. The result is that central City holding have to pay more while suburban properties pay less. The Council only receives the same amount as before, and has not raised the rates. The Mayor points out that Wanganui recently, found it necessary to revert to ratipg on annual value, and lie considers this fairer as the owners of expensive buildings now escape too lightly. “It would not surprise me,” he says, “to find ratepayers reversing the decision of last year.”
