PEA RIFLE FATALITY
AUCKLAND, July 19,
Walter Motion, aged 25, died at Auckland Hospital this mornmg as the result of a bullet wound. On Sunday afternoon, deceased was cleaning a pea rifle, when the weapon was accidentally discharged, and the bullet entered his body. An operation was performed, but he gradually sank.
POULTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS. NELSON, July 19. The following New Zealand Championships have been awarded at the Nelson Poultry Show:—Duck or drake (heavy breed), J. MAN KILLED BY CAR.. ROTORUA, July 19. Great public interest centres round proceedings taken here for alleged negligent driving, and driving a car whilst in a state of intoxication. Tho case arises out of the death of John O’Connor, who was killed by a motor car on the Whaka Road on June 29. After hearing voluminous evidence, including two different statements by the accused, in tho second of which he confessed that he knocked O’Connor down and ran away because he was afraid, the accused pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial. The Magistrate dismissed the charge of driving while intoxicated.
MAORI “ BOOKIE ” FINED. ROTORUA, July 19. Before Mr Paterson, S.M., this morning, Ilori Mau was fined £25, on a charge of bookmaking and £lO for betting on totalisator odds. FARMERS’ PARTY PROPOSAL. DANNEVIRKE, July 10. At its meeting, the Farmers’ Union Provincial Executive of Southern Hawke’s Bay discussed the Nelson remit for the Dominion conference to the effect that the Dominion Conference be urgently pressed to promptly formulate a Farmers’ Political Party. Major McDonnell moved a motion supporting the proposal. After discussion the motion was defeated by one vote, an amendment being carried by five votes to four, instructing the delegates to oppose the remit. v The delegates, however, stated that although they would carry out the instruction, they would express their own views on -the subject to the Dominion Conference. FINE FOR FRAUD. FELL DING, July 19. An unusual case was before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., when James Henry Pea ley (Rongotea), pleaded guilty to a charge of offering for sale a sack of potatoes with large ones on top and small ones underneath. A fine of £1 was imposed, with 10s costs.
