FAMOUS ITALIAN PAINTER
ON HIS WAY JO SYDNEY.
AUCKLAND, July iG. Two through passengers from Vancouver to Sydney on hoard the Aorangi, which arrived at Auckland yesterday, are Count Arnaldo Casella Tamburini, a famous Italian portrait painter, and lns| wife, Countess Tamburini. Count Casella Tamhurini’s special mission is to present two portraits of Ids Holiness Pope Pius XI. at the corning Eucharist Congress to he held at Sydriey in September next. Both these portraits were painted by the Count. One portion shows the Pope praying in the Sistine Chapel, while the other depicts the pontiff in his full and magnificent coronation robes, surrounded 1 % his cardinals, at Benediction in the chapel. A special prayer, composed by the Pope, accompanies the paintings. Count Casella Tamburini is the son of a famous Italian painter, and was horn at Florence. He is portrait painter to the Royal Court of Italy, and has painted King Victor Emanuel oil five occasions, and the Queen and Princess Yolanda have.also sat several times for the painter. The Count has for some years past exhibited portraits done by himself ,in galleries at Rome, Florence, London,; Paris and Munich. Signor Benito Mussolini has also been painted by the artist, as well as some famous men in the United States.
Last year Count Casella Tamburini was a passenger on the Berengaria from New York to Cherbourg. The beautiful Queen Marie, of Rumania, who was returning to her native land from her American tour, was on the same vessel. She gave the Count a noeeial sitting and had arranged for him afterwards to- proceed to the Royal palace at Bucharest to paint further portraits. However, as the'Count explained, the visit did not eventuate, owing to the death of the King shortly after the Queen’s return. Count Casella. Tamburini will make n fora of Australia.-before the EueharisCongress opens. . Afterwards he hopes to retuni to New Zealand and visit snhib of the scenic resorts.
