“ BECKY ’’—WEDNESDAY

Hero is a different picture—the heart-winning tale of a little shop girl who becomes a stage sensation. Her trials and escapades make a vivid, fascinating picture—full of laughter and tears! Becky AfeCloske'y, a shop assistant occupying a single room in a New York tenement, is discharged from A lacy’s Department Store for incompetence. The same day she meets Dan Scarlett, a “ man about town ” who secures her an engagement at the Trocadero Theatre. To celebrate the success of the first night of the 1927 Frivolities, Spicgolberg,' the producer, gives a party. To Becky’s delight, John Estabrook, of the wealthy and aristocratic Maryland Estabrooks’, also attends. She had often seen Estabrook at Macy’s, and had singled him out as her ‘ ideal man’; lie does not recall her, but is captivated by her charm. He unwittingly offends her, however, and they quarrel. The following day he calls and apologises. Later, lie proposes to her, and Becky accepts. In the meantime, Nan Estabrook, John’s sister, has met Dan Scarlett in a cabaret, and fallen in love with him. Dan is honestly in love with Becky, but to further his own interests he deliberately flatters Nan. Carried away by his admiration, Nan invites him to a reception at her mother’s house. Much to his surprise, he meets Becky there, with John. Later in the evening, Becky overhears Nan proposing to elope with Dan—on the proceeds of her famous jewels, j The couple make excuses, and slip away unobserved. Becky follows them. Arrived at Dan’s apartment, she finds him preparing to leave—with the j jewels, but without the girl. Then ; Kostnbrook himself arrives in searcli ! of Becky, and in order to avoid him, I the girls hide in Dan’s bedroom. Estabrook accuses Dan of having hidden • Becky in his flat. In order to save Nan, although she knows that Esta- 1 brack will probably denounce her and believe the worst. Becky conies out of the bedroom. Estabrook then reveals himself in his true colours, and Dan Scarlett tells the truth about his affair with Nan. . . . A topical and comedy also will bo 1 shown. On Friday next: “Alias the Deacon.”
