Thanks to the extraordinary publicity afforded the forthcoming international boxing encounter between Gene Tunney, the holder of the heavy-weight pugilistic championship of the world, and ’Tom Heeney, the New Zealand blacksmith from Gisborne, an event which is to bo decided on July 26th. at the Yankee Stadium in New York, the greatest interest is being, evinced in the fistic bout, and it is certain that representatives from all parts of the British Empire will bo present to witness the important encounter in America’s metropolis.

MAYS DEFEATS GRIME. NEW YORK, July 9

In a ten rounds out, Mays gained a decision over Grime, after one of the most thrilling fights ever witnessed at the Velodrome, Hartford.

Mays’s ability to locate Grime’s jaw and stomach at an opportune moment, turned the referee’s decision in his favour, but it was not entirely popular. Mays weighed 133 J pounds and the Australian 129^. Grime had slightly the better of things by the end of the third round, having made his opponent miss many times, and having scored some stinging rights. However, lie was not completely at home against Mays’ lofthand stylo, and tlie latter landed several hard lefts to the jaw. Grime had the better of tlie fourth round. Then-Mays seemed to solve his opponent’s style, and made up leeway with several hard lefts and rights. Grime again showed out in the sixth round, when he played on Mays’s left eye, which was hurt in the fourth round, but in tlie next round the latter again evened matters. Both men were taking and giving heavy punishment. Even fighting followed till the end of the ninth round, when Grime became weakened and tlie crowd called for Mays to finish him. Body punishment told against Grime in the filial round. The , Australian fought back, hut the decision went against him.
