From yesterday by the elimination of fourteen stops between Christchurch and Springfield, the West Coast express will be accelerated. The express for Greymonth will leave Christchurch at 10.20 a.m. instead of 9.45 and will arrive at Greymouth at the same time as previously. Owing to the senior fixture being set down for Saturday at Greymouth, a special meeting of the Sub-Union with club and field captains and secretaries of the two senior clubs will be held to-night at Keller’s rooms at 7 o’clock sharp. Prompt attendance is requested owing to counter attraction.
At a meeting of the executive of the N.Z. Trotting Association held at Wellington on Monday, the Nelson Jockey Club reported that, at its last meeting, F. Mond, driver of Audubon Child, had been charged with inconsistent running in two events, but no action had been tanen. F. Lynch, driver of Rota Nelson, had protested against the driving of F. Monk behind Audubon Child, but the protest had been dismissed. Lynch had asked for a refund of his deposit. Hie action of the club was endorsed in each case, and Lynch’s application was granted, although it was decided to inform him that this could not be taken as a precedent.
The Hon. the Minister of Lands (Mr A. D. McLeod) has advised Mr Seddon, M.P. that the following clause is proposed to'be inserted in this year’s Reserves and Lunds Disposal Bill—- “ Item: Cancelling the. reservation over Reserve No. 137, Block XV. Waimea Survey District, Westland Land District. (Fde L. and S. 2/185).” This section containing three acres was reserved for cemetery purposes by warrant published in Gazette of 11th. May -076. There is no evidence of any burials having taken plaqo in the cemetery which is not a suitable site. The Stafford cemetery is but two miles distance. It is desired to uplift the reservation and dispose of the land under the provisions of the Land Act, 1924. The Department of Health and the Westland County Council concur in the proposal.”
The Hon K. Williams (Minister of Public Works) has advised Mr T. E. Y. Seddon, M.P. as follows:—“In further reply to your letter of tlie 23rd. May last, regarding the Bruce Bay Road, South Westland, I have to advise that the position concerning this matter has lieen investigated and it appears that the question of legalising this road through the Maori land in that locality has been under action by my Department for some time. Formal notice of the intention to take land for the road published in the “Hokitika. Guardian” on the 2nd. and 3rd. Inst, and after the lapse of the statutory period, for lodgment of objections mentioned therein, namely 40 days, it is hoped to have the required legislation completed. When this is dono the question of authorising funds for the construction of the road will receive further consideration.”
