LEAGUE FOOTBALL. CHRISTCHURCH, July 9. It was reported at tins evening's meeting of the Rugby League Executive that the third test match, New Zealand against England, would be played at Christchurch on August 25.
RULES OF PLAY
SPRINGBOK INTERPRETATION At conference.
Almost immediately after the arrival of the All Blacks in Capetown! a conference was held to consider interpretations of the laws of tho game. The Now Zealand team was represented by Mr W. Hornig (manager, M. Brownlie (captain), and' M. F. Nieholls (vice-captain), tho South African Rugby Board by Mr A. J. Pienaar, and the South Africa Referees’ Society by delegates from various provinces, with Mr J. D. do Villiers (president) in the chair. In announcing the result of the conference, the South African Referees’ Society, made the following statement:
Tho agreement, signed by tlie three Ncur Zealand representatives and by the president, and tw'o South African delegates, was ns follows: Scrum.—(l) In a serum a player may hook with either font provided the ball lias passed both feet of a man
on cither side, and tho other requisites with regard to “fairly in the scrummage” are fully complied with. (2) The front line of tho forwards is the line formed by the ordinary normal stance of players in the front
rank. (3) A player in a' scrum may lift his foot from the ground before the hall lis fairly in the scrum pro-
vided he does not advance such foot beyond the front line of his forwards. (4) Packing should take place alternately, man for man, and two or more players arc not allowed to pack with their heads together. ROVER A “SCRUM HALF.”
For a breach of this rule the referee shall order another scrum. (5) If a player is putting tho ball into a scrum, ho shall he given a reasonable opportunity to get on-side. The player who puts in the hall is considered a serum-half. (G) The hall shall not

where the scrum was ordered. (71 When a serum is ordered players shall go down without undue delay; reasonable time, however, being allowed for any player who is making a legitimate effort to get up. 1 Tackle.—(B) It is accepted that, in the ordinary course of events, when a player fields or catches the ball mid opponents are charging him, ho may turn ills back on them and fall down with the hall between himself and bis own in-goal. This is allowed, provided when ho is “tackled” lie immediately rolls away from the ball or gets up. If lie is prevented from doing so by opponents a penalty kick shall be awarded against the opposing side. In all other cases sucli n, player shall immediately put down tho hall between himself and his opponents’ goal-line.
For ward-ip ass.—JO) When players are on the move and a confrere in front of the passer takes the ball from a forward pass', it is ruled as a for-
ward pass and not as off-side against the recipient, provided the ball is not handed forward, in which event a penalty kick is awarded for off-side against the recipient.
Off-side.—(lo) A player who is standing off-side is penalised for offside immediately he receives or attempts to play the ball. Line-out.—(Ll) In the line-out, <t
player is off-side when lie stands between his opponents’ forwards and his opponents’ hacks. The penalty shall he inflicted the moment the ball passes the five yards’ limit. There Vs nothing to prevent players of both sides standing in single file. (12) A player may run info a lineout to receive the ball, provided he runs into a gap and provided be does
not come in contact with opponents standing in the line-out. If two players from opposite sides running lor the same ga'p conic in contact with each other, it shall not he considered as nil offente.
Fair-catch.—(l3) A player making a fair-catch need not claim it oraly, but lie must immediately claim it by making a mark with his heel n't the spot where' lie made the catch. Duration of Matches.—(l4) ft Is agreed that the duration of all matches played during the tour shall be 40 minutes each way, with the exception of the First match, which will be 35 minutes each way.
