A new railway syren, with a shriek which is much more penetrating than that of the whistles at present in use, has been fitted on two engines in use in the North Auckland section of the railway. Owing to Hie alarming number of level crossing smashes recently the railway authorities desired improved warning methods, and if the syrens prove satisfactory they, will be fitted on all engines jn r Zealand,
