ON SECOND NEW ZEALAND TOUR
The Scottish tradition, when it is tlio inspiration of an interpretative master, can he so fine a story of faith, courage, humanity and poetry, that few of us—whether Scots or no—who have not come under its spoil. Sometimes the interpreter is a Burns or a Barrie, a writer of enduring words or an immortal theme; sometimes iie is a singer, a bard on whom has fallen the flowing mantlo of Scottish minstrelsy—such a bard as William HeUghan, who is now engaged on his second tour of the Dominion and who is to appear at the Princess Theatre on Wednesday night. Not that Heughan—as the public of this town knows by now—is restricted to the poetry and music of his native laird for the delivery of his music. His unusual equipment as an actor and singer permits him to range far and wide for his material, and to give a programme of such a varied and interesting nature as to appeal to all classes and creeds. He is equally at home in the English or Irish, the Italian or the Russian. For Heughan is nothing if not versatile ; and there will be many who, having once fallen under the magic spell of' his art, will he eagerly looking forward to this opportunity of hearing him again. He has come direct to New Zealand from a third tour ol Canada, and the United States, where, judging from the glowing tributes paid him”by' many of the greatest critics, ho is recognised as one of the greatest and most compelling artists of the present day. “ ARIZONA BOUND ” FRI DAY
,A cast of unusual strength is a notable feature of “ Arizona Bound,” tho first picture presenting Paramount’s new Western star, Gary Cooper, showing on Friday at the Princess Theatre. There orb four principal characters in the picture, and these important parts are in the hands of Cooper himself, Betty Jewel, El Brendcl and Jack Dougherty. Miss Jewel, a young player of exceptional beauty, lias recently been made a contract member of the famous Paramount stock company, following a series of performances which have established her as an actiess of exceptional charm and ability. El Brendcl, the funny Swede, long recognised as one of the funniest comedians of vaudeville, plays the comedy role of “()ley Smoke” Oleson, and contributes an uproarious picture of a blundering Swede. However, the list of principal characters should include the name of “Flash,” Gary Cooper’s superlatively beautiful horse, which will undoubtedly create a sensation as the most remarkable steed ever shown on the screen. The cream-coloured Arabian is described as a positive marvel of beauty and training. Gary' Cooper, who won his elevation to stardom, following his remarkable work in “Children of Divorce,” is tall, lanky and handsome, and is described as a typical Westerner. Not only is he an expert horseman and an adept with the six-shooter, but he also is an actor of remarkable versatility. %. r Further chapters of the new serial “ The Fire Fighters.” a topical and a good comedy also will be shown.
