TRANSPORT CONTROVERSY.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, T read with dismay the letter signed by Air T. Toohe.v in your issue of yesterday. I cannot eompreneiul the action of the authorities in deliberately passing over the firm of Toohey’s Afotors. Ltd. Especially see-

ing that the. payment for ears conveying our farmer visitors partly consisted of public moneys, in so far as the public subscriptions from private individuals and subsidies from local

bodies were concerned. The distribution of these moneys should milouhtedly have been made without ’car or favour and certainly without

any petty spite. Can it be pointed out in wiint way the firm'of Toolioy’s Motors Limited lias done any wrong? Is it wrong for a firm of enterprising young men to establish a legitimate enterprise in Hokitika? Have the individual members been guilty of any misconduct that would warrant preference being given to outside cars from Kuinara and Greymouth a.-,

against a firm that pays local taxation. Let us cast our eyes back to the year 1914 when the war drums were' throbbing, when Europe was trembling under the tramp of the feet of the greatest human power ever launched and when civilisation itself, together with our own personal safety was at stake the name of Toohey was' then familiar. Tlie Toohey’s were much in demand with other reliable specimens of manhood. No fewer than four of tlio Toohey family lined up and entered the contest- on our behalf and throats were made hoarse by speeches praising their action. The men were told they would never be forgotten and how lias this promise been kept? How is our gratitude being shown? I am, etc., LEST AYE FORGET. Hokitika, Juno 4tli, 1928.
