A New Zealand born officer, Mr D. Burgess, following the request of a deputation, has cabled Captain Kings-ford-Smith, offering his services as Navigator of the trans-Tasman flight.

He is third officer on the Malcura and not unknown to Captain Smith', having met him on several occasions ’when the Makura was at San Francisco.

There is a feeling that the flight should be shared by a New Zealander, and it was this that the deputation put to Air Burgess. No difficulty is anticipated with the Union Steamship Company in getting leave should Captain Smith favour the request. SYDNEY, duly 4. The navigator for Kingsford Smith and Ulm’s coming flight, to New Zealand will be Air Litehclcl, described as a New Zealander, and third officer of the Union Company’s AVaitapu, and formerly third officer on the Tahiti. OAAIARU, July 4.

Litchfield is an Australian.. He has been granted leave by the Union Steamship Company to undertake the flight. His appointment was made before Captain Kingsford Smith learned of the New Zealand Government’s wish for a native born New Zealander to act as navigator.
