The concert and ball to be held in Kanieri Hall on 'Wednesday in aid of the Druids Piano Fund promises to he one of the most successful held for some time. Several new faces will appear for the first time at the concert. The music for the ball will be in the capable hands of Goodlcllows Orchestra, who will introduce the latest one-steps “ Tvingsford Smith ” ana “ Smithy ” for the first time. 'We arc confident the entertainment will prove a huge success. Cars for the performers will leave the Railway Hotel corner at 7.: 10 p.m. Newman’s cars will leave parage for concert at 7.45 and for the dance at 10.-15. So roll up and make this a bumper night.
'When at the Lake Kanieri hatchery dill-inn: the week-end some of the visitors inspected the whitebait placed in one of the ponds last season for experimental purposes. An examination of several of the fish revealed that all had grown into inanga. considered the parent lish of the whitebait. ’1 ho inanga, however, were dwarfted, duo to the confinement and lack of suitable feed. The result, however, confirms a general opinion as to the ultimate destiny of the whitebait-, though the conclusion may not satisfy all students who consider there are varieties of small fish all classed as whitebait, and the exhibits at Lake Kanieri arc but one of the varieties.
Recently tlic Westland Progress Longue had occasion to call the attention of the Telephone Office to the difficulty in obtainin'; ready connections in intor-Tslaiul communications, although the Department had circularised local subscribers in respect to the use of the telephone for the purpose of communicating with the North Island. On looking into the matter of the complaints, the Postmaster has advised the Progress League as follows:—“I have to inform you in reply to your letter of the 22nd nit-., that Hokitika is not within range of the i liter-island telephone service. Apparently the wrong issue of a pamphlet on the question lias caused a misunderstanding. As a Telephone Inspector has lately visited Hokitika a further communication will probably follow later.” The oversight mentioned in the foregoing was also brought under the notice of the Telephone Inspector when here last week, and the matter is being referred to headquarters for rectification of the obvious misunderstanding in the matter.
