THE EX-SPEAKER
DOES NOT DESIRE PEERAGE
RUGBY, June 20.
Hie announcement that the late Speaker of the House of Commons, Mr Whitley, for personal reasons,, does not desire promotion, to the peerage caused little surprise among his intimate colleagues in the House, where it was known that he desired to retire altogether from legislative and political duties on relinquishing his post in the lower House.
He is, however, the first speaker for a hundred years who has not been so honoured. In more recent years a viscountcy has been conferred in such cases.
It is generally assumed that Mr Wliitlev will receive some other honour from the King, whose desire to comply with the House of Commons request that some signal mark of royal favour should he conferred was communicated to the House by the Prime Minister yesterday. The King’s answer will lie- considered by the House to-morrow).
