INCIDENT AT THAMES
AUCKLAND, June 26
Burglary and arson committed by unknown persons are tho crimes established by police authorities who have made exhaustive investigations into an unusual case of theft and fire in the Thames district. At midnight recently fire totally destroyed a threeroomed cottage, owned by I liomas E. McLc-ay, of Beach Road, Thames, who estimates his loss at £2OO. But foi the prompt action of a neighbour, a well-built bach, also tho property of McLeay, which was on the.samo block of land, would have been razed to the ground, the fire having a good hold on the building when it was discovered. “Swaggers” are suspected of the offences. The total losaf including the demolition of the cottage and theft from the bach, which was partly burned, is assessed at approximately £3OO.
TFie thieves, who broke and entered tho premises, are believed to have worked with remarkable thoroughness. Detectives are convinced, after several days’ enquiries, that burglars in tlio night broke into tho cottage, ransacking it of everything of value, and then concentrated on the hack after removing what they desired. The police are satisfied that the thieves ignited both places, thinking all traces of their crimes would he obliterated by lire.
