THE BEAM MERGER

(Received -this day of. 9.30 a.m.) OTTAWA, June 27. Canada is vitally interested in and affected by the proposed merger of the beam wireless system and Eastern Cable Coy, and various other communications within tho Empire. According to the Postmaster-General, Veniot, tho service supervised and controlled by the Pacific Cable Board is certainly affected. Canada’s approval of the merger is dependent on the insertion in the merger of an agreement of certain conditions governing the rates for service by- wireless and cable lines. The complete governmental control of all cable and radio services in case of r war is also important. The merger is expected to eliminate costly competition and reduce the cost to treasuries for maintenance, especially the Pacific.

BRITISH COLUMBIA ELECTIONS VANCOUVER, Juno 27.

One hundred ami sixteen candidates were nominated to-day to- contest fortyeight seats at British Columbia General Election. Polling day is July 18th. The nominations are featured by tho small Labour representation, numbering nine.

Mr Baldwin, In accordance with precedent, moved that a pension of £4OOO yearly be paid to Speaker Whitley. ' Mr dynes moved to reduce it to £IOOO. He regarded £4OOO as unjusti- ' fied. The amendment was defeated by 224 to 103.
