HALS. NELSON. LONDON, May 14
The building of the battleship Nelson had, declared Lord Soutliborougli at yesterday’s meeting in London of Sir AY. G. Armstrong, Whitworth and Co., Ltd., resulted in a substantial loss. Discussions were now taking place as to this with certain Government departments. He- was hopeful that their claims would meet with that consideration by the Government, to which lie believed they were en-
titled. . The negotiations, it is understood, have been in progress between the Admiralty and Messrs Armstrong, Whitworth for about a year. Launched in September 1925 from the company’s Newcastle yard, tu. ship was estimated to cost between £7,000.000 and £8.000,000. It was expected that she would lie completed by the summer of 1926, but there was delay and the trials did not take place
until April, 1927. The company bad entered into a firm contract.” and as during the period of the general strike the ship was in the yard with little or no progress possible on her the time factor became acute for the company. The attitude of the Admiralty up to recently, it is stated, has been that it cannot he responsible for losses caused by such delays.
“WHY T AM 83.” DONCASTER-, May 16. The reason for my good health lies i„ the fact that I drink a glass of Hickleton homebrewed, bfccr evei y lunch-time. This is a mesa go given to me to-i a - l>v Lord Halifax, of Hickleton Hall, near Goldtliorpe, who will be 8.) in June. Lord Halifax, who was president of the English Church l mon twin 1869 to 1919, still retains his 1 lent health, and his tall figure is to lie seen almost every day going for a five and sometimes ten miles walk through the deer park and woods in the grounds of his home. ~ The home-brewed Hickleton ale has been famous throughout this district for generations. Every visitor to the hall is urged to have a glass, and its brewing in a special brewery in the grounds is a family affair. The present brewer’s father and grandfather did the same work.
