OBITUARY
silt WHSTBY. PERCEVAL. (United Press Association.—Oy Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) LONDON, June 23. The death is announced of Sir Westiby Perceval, formerly Agent-General for New Zealand and Tasmania.—Australian Press Association—United Service.
Sir West by Brook Perceval was horn at Launceston, Tasmania in 1854. He i was educated at Christ’s College, England. He became a barrister of the Middle Temple in 1878, and returned to Christchurch and commenced to practice. He represented Christchurch in Parliament from 1887 to 1891, and was Chairman of Committees in 1891. He was Agent-General in London for New Zealand from 1891 to 1896, and for Tasmania from 1896 to 1898. He was a member of the Royal ComniisI sion for the Chicago Exhibition in 1894-5 and for the Paris Exhibition in 1900, and was a member of the Tariff Commission in 1904. He was created K.C.M.G. in 1894 and a Knight of St Gregory the Great by the Pope in 1891. He published three books on New Zealand subjects—“ Farming and Labour in New Zealand.” “Productions of New Zealand,” and “New Zealand Timber and Forest Products.” Sir Westby married in 1880 Miss Jessie Johnson daughter of the Hon John Johnson, M.L.C. of Wellington. There are two sons and two daughters.
