THE COOKS RESUME. SYDNEY, June 25. The picking up of crews for all the idle ships has begun.
At Melbourne to-day the whole water front was busy when the crows for five ships were picked up without trouble, the cooks making no reference to the roster system.
MOTOR TRAGEDY. SYDNEY, Juno 25. The motor car which plunged into the water at Tarcn Point, as cabled today, contained six persons, four of whom were able to get ashore. Two girls, Maude- Dennis and Betty Hickey, were imprisoned in the car, and were drowned.
SYDNEY GRAFT. SYDNEY, June 25,
The Civic Commissioners have decided not to accept Silas Maling’s resignation, dated June Ist, but have dismissed him as from the. date of his suspension from the position of Dep-uty-Manager of the City’s Electricity Department.
The Commissioners have also 'instructed tho civic authorities to demand the deposit by Milling into the city funds of the sum of £IO,GOO, which was said to have been received by him as a secret Commission in connection with the contract for the supply of certain plant. The City Solicitor has been instructed to obtain an opinion regarding the recovery of money from other persons concerned. One of the Sydney Civic Commissioners, Mr Morton, stated that a Judge would be engaged for the next six months in sifting the Sydney civic scandals, and the Civic Commissioner?! will ask that the one Royal Commission will conduct all of tho inquiries.
LAMBERT’S ALLEGATION
SYDNEY, June 25
The evidence Ims concluded before the Royal Commission inquiring in regard to Mr Lambert's bribery charge, and counsel have commenced their addresses.
THE SMITH TRAGEDY. (Received this Jay at 9.30 a.m). PERTH, June 20. Hulmc has been remanded for eight days. Mrs Smith, who has improved, stated her husband was shot dead on Friday afternoon, the employee stating lie had fallen from a tractor and been killed. She wanted "to rush to tho spot when the same employee sympathetically persuaded her to remain in the house, immediately after which he punched her on the face and body unmercifully and secured her with ropes to a bed-post, assaulted her and then attacked other member of the family. The baby is recovering. The six-year-old girl still is in a critical condition.
A LARGE FIRE. (Received this day at 11.25 a.m.) HOBART, June 26. A large fruit pulping factory and a general store in Huon District were destroyed by fire. The damage is estimated at £20,000.
