CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD.
The monthly meeting of tho Canterbury Education -Board ?vas held at Christchurch oil Friday and was attended by Messrs C. S. Thompson (chairman), W. A. Bqnks, J. Maze, Q. W. Armitage, W. H. Winsor, j. G. Gow, E/H. Andrews, }V. Johnson, R. Wild, T. Hughes, and H. J. Bignell. The appqintment was confirmed of Miss L. ")V’ljiams as assistant mistress at Greyniouth. The list of resignations included the names of three teachers who were leaving to be married. Tlie Appointments Committee reported that the department had advised that the conditions under which teachers would be granted leave to go aboard would be: “ One-third salary wi|l bp paid during absence from New Zealand for such time as may be approved to teachers who arc definitely intending, to pursue educational enquiries or investigations abroad and whp, oh return, are prepared to furnish the Department with a report.”
It was resolved to ask the Department to draw tho attention of teachers through the Gazette to the necessity for sending their resignations to tl)c committee as well as to tlie hoard. The Education Department advised the retirement from the inspectorate of Air G. Raymond, tho transfer of All J. Bruntoji from Napier to Christchurch, and the appointment of Air S A. Clark to serve in Hawke’s Bay. The Board resolved to express its appreciation of Air Raymond’s long aim satisfactory service and to extend to Air Clark the Board’s congratulations on his promotion. The Department has advised that an inspector from Otago would serve part time in Can terbury to deal with tlie schools in the southern part of the district. Air H. Johnston, agriculture instructor, reported—As the harvesting of tllf potato competition crops is now com pleted, practically all the data in connection therewith has been sent in and I submit a separate detailed re port. From this it will he seen that the winners are:—Ngahere 90, Ist: Ruatapu, 79, 2nd; Wallis Siding, 78. 3rd; Humphreys, 70, -Ith.
Ngahere: Aucklander, 9 tons 10 cwt;. Up-to-Date, 8 tons 7 cwt ; Sutton’s Abundance, 9 tmis 9 cwt ; King Edward, 11 tons 11 cwt.
Ruatapu: Aucklander, 10 tons If cwt; Up-to-Date, 11 tons 13 cwt: Sutton’s Abundance, 7 tons 6 cwt: King Edward 4 tons 15 cwt. Wallis Siding: Aucklander, 5 tons 8 cwt; Up-to-Date, 8 tons 7 cwt; Sutton’s Abundance, 6 tons 10 cwt; King Edward, 10 tons 3 cwt. Hunipreys: Aucklander, 7 tons f cwt; Up-to-Dat.e, 10 tons 16 cwt; Sutton’s Abundance 5 tons 14 cwt; King Edward, 8 tons 13 cwt.
The Koiterangi Upper School Committee stated that it proposed to expend 810 incidental money on ground improvements, and to carry out add:’ tional work to the value of CIO as r voluntary contribution. Tlie Committee applied for a grant of £lO to enable the improvement to lie completed. The request was acceded to The foreman’s report for the month was received and adopted. Hokitika: Authority was given for the roof of the school to be painted with bitumen in red.
