PLANE GOES TWICE,
ROME, June 23. * An official message states that the Italian airman Penso, has twice come down to the low level of fifteen feet in an attempt to alight at General Nobile’s camp, but tlio rough ice there had made these attempts hopeless. The marooned men, therefore, are now making a smooth landing place. The party of Alpinists who went out have returned to the steamer “Braganza,” as they’ had failed to locate Malgrem’s party., who are on foot. LONDON, June 23.
A message from King’s Bay’ states that Captain Maddalena again found a landing on the ice near Nobile’s location to bo impossible. He threw out accumulators, medicines, and smoke bombs, with which General Nobile will lie able to indicate his position. STOCKHOLM, June 23.
The ice floe conveying General Nobile and party is now drifting closer to the Great Glacier, and is thus increasing the chances of an aeroplane landing.
PRIZE FOR MADDALENA. ROME, June 23. The Italian Government’s Prize-Giv-ing Committee for important, artistic and scientific works has awarded Captain Maddalena and his comrades £IOOO for finding General Nobile.
NOBILE’S PLEA. LONDON, June 22. A message from King’s Bay’ states that General Nobile, amid his own anxieties, does not forget the welfare of his separated colleagues. He has asked for dogs and a sledge to be sent to North Cape in search of Malgrem and party, who have not been heard of for three weeks.
ROME, June 22. A naval sea-plane, piloted by Commander Rayvazzoni, left Pisa en route to tlic Polar regions, to assist in the rescue of Nobile.
SEARCH FOR. AMUNDSEN. ROME, June 23. The “Italia” supply steamer “Citta di Milano” is sending out a seaplane to search for Amundsen along the West Coast of Spitzbergen. LONDON, June 22. In addition to seeking for Malgrem and his mates, the Italian fliers, Maddalena and Pan,so, after dropping new equipment at General Nobile’s camp, will proceed to Cape Leigh Smith to look for the men who were carried off in the,main part of the airship Italia. If there is no sign of them, the aviators will continue to reconnoitre between Spitzbergen and Franz Josef Land.
Meanwhile the icebreaker Malygin is going eastward of Spitzbergen in a search for Amundsen which is difficult because it is not indicated where he was going, and what is his plane's wireless wave length. ' t
OSLO, June 23. Riiser-Larsen is trying to borrow the streamer “Brnganza” from Captain Romanga, commander of the “Citta di Milano” to aid in the search for Amundsen.
BERLIN. June 22, Three collapsible lxiats are being forwarded to Spitzbergen to facilitate in the rescues. They can be dropped from the air. PARTS. June 23. There is growing anxiety here for the safety of Amundsen and Gilhaud, who went on in a French plane to Spitzbergen, despite the fact that they carried a fortnight’s provisions, but French air.exports arc confident that the seaplane he left with is of most solid construction, and is capable of riding out any sea.
NOBILE SAVED. (Received this day at 8.30 a.m.) STOCKHOLM, June 24. The Defence Minister says Tornberg, 'head of the Swedish expedition, has wirelessed: “Nobile saved. Rescue work continues.” 0 ROME, June 24. An official announcement states the Citta Di Milano is going northward 60 miles, in order to he in closer touch with the Swedish rescuers. New flights are being made in conjunction with Swedish and Finnish airmen, to cover Leader Field, in search for portion of the Italia’s crew, who remained with the airship. „ There is no; further news, of the missing marchers.
NOBILE BREAKS A LEC. LONDON, June 24. A message from King’s Bay reports Nobile broke bis leg when the Swedish aeroplane landed. He is now aboard the Quest, and his condition is believed to be serious. FAINT SIGNALS HEARD. KINGS BAY, Juno 24. The 'ice-breaker Malygin reports it picked up weak wireless .signals, "which it is suggested may lie from Amundsen. If so, Amundsen must lie within 60 miles, as neither he nor the icebreaker were able to speak more than that distance.
