VISIT OF OTAGO FARMERS
JULY 2nd AND 3rd
The touring Otago farmers party which are due to arrive at Greymouth on Thursday, June 28, are fixed to reach Hokitika the following Monday (July 2) at 5 p.m. ' At a meeting of citizens held yesterday afternoon at the County Chambers, there were present,—The Mayor (G. A. Perry), J. AY. Morris, Leslie Michel, Keller, Newman jr., Wilson, Parry, S. Preston, J. J. McIntosh, D. J. Evans. Messrs Baillie, (Greymouth) and Murdoch (Ross) were also present. ■ Apologies were received for'the absence of Hon. Michel, Messrs Jeffries, Coles, Murdoch and Duff. Particulars of the visit were given by .Messrs Baillie and Murdoch, the latter intimating that £2O would be available front the general fund towards the reception and entertainment at this end. It was expected about 350 would be on the train. Various matters affecting accommodation and entertainment were discussed at length, and the- following outline programme agreed to:— Monday, July 2—Arrive 5 p.m., and escorted to hotels, etc.
8 p.m.—Picture entertainment at Princess Theatre. 9 p.m.—Jazz dance at Soldiers’ Hall. Tuesday, July 3.-9 a.m., assembly at Newmans motor garage, Mayor to extend public welcome. . 9.30 a.m.—Depart for Lake Kanieri. 11 a.m.—Leave Lake" Kanieri for Kolcatahi. Noon—Farmers’ luncheon at Kokatjihi Public Hall. At 2.30 p.m.—Leave for Rimu Flat Dredge, and return t-o town. 7.30 p.m.—Princess Theatre, scenic lecture by Dr Teiclieliiiaitn. 9 p in.—Welcome social at Soldiers’ Hall, musical evening with refreshments. Wednesday, July 4.—Depart early morning for Dunedin. Messrs Keller and Mclntosh said the hotelkeepers would do the best they could in regard to accommodation. It. was further resolved to enquire by advertisement what additional private accommodation was available and the charges. This information should he communicated to Mr .T. W. Morris who was appointed Secretary to the Citizens’ Committee. . In order to adhere to the time-table on Tuesday, Mr Newman was asked to place someone definitely in charge of the motor cars available, which will number about sixty cars at least. Local contributions received will be devoted to the entertainment fund at this end. It was left to the Secretary to interview Mr Moore regarding Hip picture entertainment. The offer of the Jazz Club to arrange for the dance was appreciated. The luncheon at Kokatalii was referred to the district farmers branch, Mr Murdoch to communicate with Mr O’Neil. A vote of thanks to the chair fvncluded the meeting.
