ADMIRAL SIR SYDNEY FREMANTLE.

LONDON, April 20. It was announced yesterday that Admiral Sir Sydney It. Fremantle has been placed on the retired list at his own request, to date April 5, and in consequence Vice-Admiral iSir Frederick L. Field lias been promoted admiral.

Sir Sydney Fremantle, who is 60 comes of one of Britain’s hereditary naval families. ' During tho war, as Rear-Admiral, he planned and carried out the whole of the arrangements of the evncution of Helles, Gallipoli, one of the most brilliant talotical operations of the war. v He was in command of the First Battle Squadron which constituted the guard of the German fleet interned at Seapa Flow. The practice was for the guard to go to sea occasionally for gunnery and torpedo practices, and it was on an occasion of this kind that the Germans took the opportunity to sink their ships. ' The fleet returned at full sliced and( saved the Baden battleship, three cruisers, and some 20 destroyers, including the flagship of Admiral von Renter who was taken as prisoner in Admiral Fremantle’s flagship, Revenge, to Invergordon. Admiral .Fremantle has now become closely indentified with some important concerns in the City.
