£4,000 SWINDLE.
LONDON, April 21. The Dutch police have enlisted the aid of Scotland Yard in tracking two men who some time ago defrauded Messrs Thomas Cook and Son of £4.000 at the firm’s Amsterdam office. A few weeks ago, states our Amsterdam correspondent, two men presented at Messrs Cook’s office a cheque for 29,000 Dutch guilders (£2,415), which was duly honoured. A week laier they appeared with a cheque for 91,000 guilders (£7,580) and, as they were.m a hurry, accepted £4,000. They Were to return on the following day for the balance. They did not return, and the cheque was found to be false It was learned that the two men were probably South Americans travelling in Europe with money raised by fraudulent -means. Their names are given as Bruno Andrea, aged between 30 and 35, dark, clean-shavenspeak-ing French, German, and Spanish, and Vilano Mario, about 46, tall and dark. The false cheque was photographed and sent to the police in various parts of America. MELBOURNE. Jsne 22. A large biscuit factory in North Melbourne was gutted by fire about midnight. Heavy damage was done.
