T Official returns issued by the New 3 Zealand Dairy Produce Board show the total shipments of butter for ten T months, August Ist, 1927, to May 31st, £ 1928, increased by 157,659 boxes, and cheese increased by 37,738 crates. Export figures for ten months afford the following comparison butter (boxes) this season 2,626,626, last season 2,469,057, an increase of 157,569. Cheese (crates) this season 926,469, last season 888,731, an increase of ’ 37,738. ; A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. * WAIROA, Juno 20. X serious accident occurred this morning at Tuai Hydro-Electric Works when an employee of the Dunedin Engineering Coy. named John Peeve, had his skull fractured through the jib of a crane falling on his head. He is now 1 lying in a critical condition. The victim died two hours afterwards. An inquest will ho held. ELECTRICAL STAFFS. PALMERSTON N., June 20. It is understood the Hydro Electrical Staff of the Public Works Department, at Mangarei, near Mangnhao, is shortly to be transferred to Palmerston North, the object being to centralise the central of three North Island generating stations here, DAIRY SHOW. Boys’ High School. FARMERS’ TRADING COY. AUCKLAND, May 20. At tne annual meeting of tho Farmers’ Trading Coy., the Chairman of Directors stated that sales direct to customers totalled £1,232,000 leaving a nett profit of £42,561. The Company’s bank overdraft, which last year stood at £78,674, was at March 31st. 1 this year reduced to £16,298 and to-day even that had keen wiped out. 1 - FIREMEN OVERCOME. WELLINGTON, June 20. : Deadly fumes were generated by a ( fire discovered in a printing room of 1 tho Famous Lasky Film Service of t N.Z. Ltd. this morning. AVhen six t firemen entered the room they were < overcome and all had to be carried out to the street. Deputy Superintendent Clarke and Fireman Philps were badly affected and liospitalled. Station offi- a cer Ledbrook, Firemen Wright, Ben- c nett and Everett were taken back to < the Central Station where they later t recovered. A second detachment oif the t Brigade suppressed the outbreak with chemicals; It originated in a heap of r waste paper and spread to a table laden t with advertising matter, slides and s gummed labels, the smoke from which t damaged the fittings and goods. It t was charged with carbon monoxide gas. f
FOOTBALL TROUBLE SETTLED. WHANGAEEI, June 20. Acting on the recommendation of North Auckland. Rugby Union, the Whangarei Management Committee of that body last evening decided to expunge from the minute book the resolution which was the basis of what has become popularly known as the Hikurangi trouble. COURT CASES. WELLINGTON, June 20. Janies Albert Machiol McMahon, alias Albert Victor James George Henry McWarren, pleaded guilty to-day to having committed bigamy and was committed for sentence.
Wm. John Thomas Wally, 36, pleaded guilty to forging and uttering two cheques involving £24 Is and. was committed for sentence on the charges. He also pleaded guilty to obtaining £l4 7s at Port Awanui by means of a Valueless cheque and; theft of binoculars and tent, and the hearing of the charges was adjourned sine die. DAIRY FACTORY MANAGERS.
PALMERSTON N., June 20
The annual meeting of the Dairy Factory Managers Association carried a resolution that the Factory Managers Association take necessary steps to lay the foundation for a federation of dairy factory managers, embracing the whole Dominion, and that a special committee be sot up to confer with a similar committee appointed by the Otago and Southland Dairy Factory .Managers Association. The committee meet at Wellington during tho last week of July.'
A report is to he submitted to tho next annual meeting of tho Association with a recommendation for a suitable constitution, such committee to be instructed not to enter into any arrangement that may involve a federated body in the Arbitration Court or hnrrass tlie provincial executive as at present constituted. Officers elected were—President, Ferguson, Orua and Downs. Provincial President, Petersen (Auckland), Young (Taranaki), Lemberg (Manawatu), Delahunty (Hawke’s Bay), Fass (Bush District), Croslie (Wairnrapn),. Middleton (South Island). Secretary, Neilsen (Pahawa). Remits were carried that the activities of the special testing officer be extended whereby samples may be analysed for added water; that the Daily Division be asked to consider the advisability of making the grading of milk for elieescmakers compulsory, with differential payments.
SOUTHDOWN SOCIETY. PALMERSTON N., June 20
At the annual meeting of the Southdown Breeders Society a resolution was passed commending the efforts of the Agriculture Department in- safeguarding the interests of livestock breeders in preventing foot am. mouth disease, and urging a continuance of the protective policy Officers elected President, Jos. Knight (Feildin") ; Vice-Presidents, J. Deans (South Island), C, -K. Vile (North Island); Council, H. J. Andrew, W W. Cimblett, J. Knight, J. Stevenson and C. E. Vile. It was resolved that the secretary write the American •Society asking for recognition of New Zealand Soutlidowns as eligible for the American stud book. CLAIM FOR. £SOOO. WANGANUI, June 20.
The Wanganui Harbour Board is claiming £SOOO from the Canterbury jSteamsbip Coy. for the services of the tug when the Gale was in difficulties in the breakers near Wanganui. A writ was tacked to the mast of the vessel in port to-day. I, WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED. TAOKANGA, June 20.
At a large and representative meeting of discharged men from public works, satisfaction was expressed at the Prime Minister's reply to Mr -MacMillan, the local member, that the Government was considering the open-| in" up of new works. In the meantime arrangements were made to allow the men to continue the occupancy of hutments. On Mr MacMillan’s suggestion the following motion was passed • “ This meeting is of the opinion that the continuation of the line from Taneatua to Opotiki will give the greatest measure of satisfaction and create the least domestic dislocation among employees until discharged; therefore the Prime Minister is requested accordingly.” A vote of thanks to the member for His efforts closed the meeting.
