The Shipping Conference adopted a resolution moved by Campbell (General Counsel of American Steamship Owners’ Assn.) pointing out the volume of traffic in Panama Canal now justified the continuous operation of the canal, day and night, and suggesting representations to the American Government to extend the hours of operation. PRICE OF GOLD. LONDON, June 15. Gold is 81s lid. WELLINGTON LOAN. LONDON, June 15. Wellington Loan has been largely over subscribed. ALLEGED ARSON. CHRISTCHURCH, June 13. The police report that a deliberate attempt was made to burn down a building used as an auction room in Good Street, JLangiora, on Thursday. A heap of inflammable rubbish had been placed at the rear of the building and ignited. When discovered the wall was burnt through and the flames were spreading. A police constable and passer-by extinguished the flames with sacks.
Three weeks ago an attempt was made to, burn down auction yards in the same town owned by the Farmers’ Co-op.
