COOKS’ STRIKE ENDS

(Australian Press Association.)

A FURTHER OBSTACLE. MELBOURNE, June 15,

Although the Cook’s strike has been declared off, trouble in regard to the manning of the ships by the Seamen’s Union is.now threatening. The Victorian branch of the Seamen’s Union was advised from Sydney to man all the ships except those on which there is non-union labour engaged. The position now is that the seamen will offer to work-oil all the ships except those which have been manned by non-unionists. The onus will be placed on tbe ship owners of refusing to engage seamen for other vessels.

. Although a record crowd attended the shipping masters’ office to-day, no call was made.

The ship owners, after a meeting stated that the strike could not be considered off until the owners could be assured that all vessels would be put into operation without any interruption. There are several serious difficulties to be overcome before sailing dates can be fixed. Even if there is no further hitch, it will be at least four weeks before the services are normal. DEREGISTRATION OF COOKS’ UNION. SYDNEY, June 15. At the Federal Arbitration Court, application was made by M.r H. Snell (Brisbane member), and others for deregistration of the Cooks’ Union. The affidavits by the applicants stated that if the members of the Union wore consulted, an overwhelming majority of them would be in favour oF accepting employment, and the applicants were satisfied that the refusal of the members of the Union to return to employment was caused by a fear of the Executive. Chief Justice Detliridge granted a rule as applied for, and made it returnable on Wednesday next. (Received this day at 8 a.m.) MELBOURNE, June 15. Following the receipt of a telegram by the shipowners from Tudehope, the cook?’ strike officially was declared off.
