The annual meeting of the ‘Westland Progress League takes place on Monday night.
His Honour Mr Justice Adams arrived yesterday and will hold a sitting of tho Supreme Court on Monday morning. The sitting will be a brief one.
The gas cooking demonstration will be continued at the Soldiers’ Hall on Tuesday afternoon, commencing at 2.30 o’clock. Mrs Heinz will prepare a well varied menu, consisting of request dishes. Afternoon tea will be dispensed.
The death took place yesterday morning at the Greymoutli Hospital of Mrs Elsie Murray, wife of Mr J. B. Murray, engineer at the Grey Valley Collieries, Dobson. Deceased was 31 years of age. She had been ill only for a brief period. She leaves two daughters, aged seven and three years.
The work of clearing and forming the new road from Ruatapu to Muliinnpua is proceeding satisfactorily. The next step will he tho metalling of the road so as to render it suitable for wheel traffic. This necessary attention should now be urged so that the road may he brought into full use as early as possible.
Tho steam fishing smack "Maud.” in charge of its owner (Captain Cuttanec) and bis son, Hngliie, arrived in port 'yesterday afiternoon at 4.45 o’clock from Westport. They left Westport at 2.30 a.in. yesterday, and had fine weather and a smooth sea during the trip down the coast. The owner was accorded a hearty welcome on arrival by tlie crowd present, whose cheers were acknowledged by three blasts of the whistle.
In a number of districts the Householders failed to elect School Committees on the statutory date, and a further opportunity is to be given on Monday evening to enable them to remedy this neglect of their civic privileges. There was a fair attendance at the Soldiers’ Hall last night for the weekly U.S.A. euchre assembly. The prizewinners wore:—Mr T. Gillooly, Miss F. Allen, Air 11. Parker, Mr W. Goodfellow, in the order named. Mesdames .Jamieson and Groufsky were tlie run-ners-up. Supper was served hv Mesdames Morgan, T. Lynch, Paterson, Parkliill and Stuart. The weekly assembly will he continued next Thursday when useful household prizes will be offered For competiion, particulars of which will appear in Tuesday’s issue.
