The annual meeting of the Westland Progress Longue will be held at the County Chambers at 7.30 o’clock on Monday evening next.
Mr W. E. Rawson, Native Trustee, is expected here to-morrow to meet the Natives interested in the Greymoutli reserve, and consider matters in regard to the proposed legislation affecting the sale of the Borough leaseholds to the occupiers. The. meeting will be held at the Courthouse.
A popular form of amusement at Greymouth during the winter evenings, as elsewhere on the Coast, is now receiving the attention of the Greymouth police authorities. It is understood that the legality of euchre tourneys for prize money will he the subject of a teat case shortly.

On Monday morning a young man, Mr 11. Thompson, a well-known resident of AVaiau, met with a serious accident. He was engaged in blasting a. tree-trunk, when a charge exploded prematurely, shattering three fingers of the left band, the tips of two fingers of the right hand, and inflicting wounds in the face and abdomen. He was immediately conveyed to the Amuri Hospital at Rotherham, where his injuries were attended to.
An Auckland press wire states that cabled advice has been received by Archbishop Averiil that the Synod of the Diocese of Melanesia, sitting at Siota, British Solomon Islands, has unanimously chosen Bishop Molyneux, at present assistant Bishop, as successor "to Bishop Steward. A delegation from Melanesia will be sent to meet the Bishops of the province of New Zealand, with whom the final selection rests. The selection will probably bo made in AA’ellington in August.

The Hokitika Swimming Club’s ball in the Soldiers’ Hall last evening attracted a largo attendance and the gathering proved a distinct success from every point of view. The music provided by Ross’ Orchestra was excellent while a number of pleasing extras were also played. The floor was in capital order and was kept well filled, Air O. Blench being in charge. The supper arangements were also very complete and the dancing proceeded merrily till 2 o’clock, the cold night being an incentive for dancing. Tonight a juvenile dance will be held when another large attendance has been prepared for, commencing at 8 o’clock.
