• United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) CANADIAN EMBASSY CRITICISED. OTTAWA, June 11. Parliament prorogued on Monday afternoon, criticising the expenditure for the Canadian Embassy at Tokio. Sir George Perley (Conservative) asked what would happen if all the dominions had ministers at Tokio. Such a situation would be full of danger in time of stress. The British Commonwealth must present a united front on foreign affairs. t Some course might be found for the whole Empire to be represented in foreign countries. Canada is moving There should be a thorough conference with i other parts of the Empire before steps wer# taken.

' CANADA’S STATUS. OTTAWA, June 12. Replying to the Opposition’s criticism in the Canadian House of Commons, the Premier, Mr McKenzie King, defended the proposed establishment of a Canadian Legation at Tokyo. This, lie said, did not mean independence, but it meant self-dependence. There was nothing in the proposal that savoured of an effort to gain Canada independence from the Rritsih Empire. In fact the action would help to maintain Canada’s relations with other parts of the empire. The old idea was that of a centralised control of the Empire. It had given way to the idea of joint control. The Conservative leader, Air Bennett, held that the establishment of the separate Legations* led rather to separation than to solidarity. He said the Legation at Tokyo would mean a pretence without power, or authority. It would be a bogus representation of their nationality, and a false representation of their sovereignty.
