Played on Cass Square on Saturday afternoon, a greasy ball played havoc with the handling at times, and made the game slow and uninteresting. There was very little footwork fbv either side in tho first Half, but in the second half the Excelsior pack using their weight made tho play tighter and had a distinct advantage. In the first spell United scored by a goal from a mark by Jenkins, an 1 Excelsiors a try by Maxwell which Stevenson failed to improve. In the second half Uniteds pressed hard for tho first ten minutes and were near scoring on several occasions'. Then the Red pack got going and from, a loose rush Stevenson scored. Soon after J. King scored from a nice piece of back play well opened up by Houston and a little later as tho result of following up it high return Nightingale got up to get the ball and score rather cleverly. None of the kicks at goal were successful and Excelsiors left tho field winners by 12 to 3.

'Fhe piny wars poor and generally uninteresting. The United hacks had a lot of saving to do and did it well, their handling heating their opponents. Hi the second half some passing went well a certain distance, hut the loose rushes were the* most payable. The forwards much much lighter and in the second half were beaten. The Excelsior forwards worked well. Dougherty, Freitas and Maxwell being most in the limelight, the former in the heavy toil hilt Maxwell did not relish any hard work. The hacks missed a lot by had handling at a critical time. Houston being the most reliable. Mr lleenan was referee.
