WANAKA NOTES

(From a Correspondent). A move to have the Haast Pass track used as a mail route, from Wanaka to Okuru and Haast, was considered and “tabooed” by the Postal Department. Afr T. E. Y. Seckloii, M.P., also Mr J. Horn, M.P., for Wakatipu, have been again approached with a view to getting the Haast tra k included in the coming season’s itinerary of the Government photographer. The Wanaka ferry service operating and running the mails on Lake Wan* aka, has this week been taken over by a Pembroke, syndicate. An opposition launch service is also changing hands. The buyers have not yet been maile known. Sporting parties made the most of the short shooting season at Aft Albert, where several camps were to lie seen. The’ fishing Season closed yesterday after the most successful season on record. The munlxsi* of visiting anglers to Makarova havo trebled all previous years.

Opossum trappers are now preparing camps up the Makarova Valley, the first season trappers have operated here. A gang of men avo employed on the Haast Pass track, attending to much needed improvements. AL- and Mrs Wm. Taylor (late of Makarova Station) were entertained at the school last week when the opportunity was made to present them with a parting gift from the Makarova residents, and several prese.il spoke highly of the sterling gualiticof the departing family, who leave tonew" fields. Mr Taylor’s mechanical knowledge and well equipm-d workshop was alwav available and ouen to local residents. O'Leary, better known as “Arawata Bill,” passed through on bis way to bis isolated homo, away in the vastness ol the Southern Alps, in the vicinity of Alt. Aspiring, having recently made a successful crossing over the main divide from Arawata to Glennrcliy, via the Dart River. He is the only known man to make tbo crossing in that locality. Bill is undoubtedly the most outstanding hermit in New Zealand, and a wirv prospector of the old school, well known and much esteemed in the Wakntipu and West. Coast districts.
