THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
OonnncT English ! It. is a curious fact that absolutely.correct grammar very often sounds wrong. “Tile wages of sin is death” is grammatically incorrect, but somehow it seems to suit the ear better (ban if a plural verb bad been used. The same applies to Kipling’s line, “Tho tumult and the ,shouting dies.” Gladstone frequently broke strict grammatical rules *n order to obtain greater euphony. A grammatical purist sent him a copy of a book lie liad written on correct English. Gladstone icplied on a postcard: “Hear Sir,—Had I studied your book in my youth my English would have boon very different from wliat ■it is.”
