The order of Masses and Devotions in St. Mary’s .Parish on Sunday, June 10th, will be as follows:—Araliura. 8.30 a.in., Hokitika, 8 a.m., 10 a.in. 7 p.m. The death took . place at Christchurch on Wednesday of Mr William IT. Main at the age of 58 years. Deceased leaves a widow (a member of the Cunningham family, formerly of Christchurch road). The Westport “Times” states that on Monday last about 10.30 o’clock a baby Austin car owned by Mr A. H. Lawn, of Hokitika, with Mrs fiiiwu as a passenger, received a severe buffeting from a car driven by a Westport lady. The baby Austin was proceeding down 800 l street and the other car was coming down T’akington street when the two met. The Austin was turned over and tin* wind screen smashed. The mudguards wore also bent and other damage done. Nobody was hurt.
The death occurred yesterday morning, of Air Thomas l.owd Rolling, at his residence. Cowper Street. Greymouth. after ailing for a few days. Deceased was a native of .Melbourne, and came to Dunedin gold field. Otago, with his parents, who afterwards kept the Retreat Hotel. Rreston Rond. I leonine to Greyrnouth in 181)5. and was a carpenter in the Railways, retiring nine years ago. His wife predeceased him six years ago. lie is survived by one son. Henry, of the Railway Department, Christchurch, and three sisters.

The death occurred yesterday morning at his residence, Thread needle Street, Greyrnouth, of Mr .James Henry Brimble, son of the late .Mr and Mrs J. Brimble, old residents of Greymouth. Deceased was a native of Greyrnouth. 45 years of age, and had been suffering from heart trouble for the last few months, lie had been an employee of the Greyrnouth Borough and .Municipal Gas Department for 15 years. He leaves a widow and a five-year-old daughter; also two sisters (Mrs Toney Arthur and Mrs J. Rutherford, the latter being in Canada), and two brothers. Mr Arthur Brimble, of Christchurch, who is visiting Greymouth. and Mr William ftrmible, of Sydney.
George Frederick Frew, who was prosecuted by the Agricultural Department for non-registration of an orchard, entered an emphatic pica ol not guilty in the .Magistrate’s Court, Christchurch, on Wednesday morning, and asked Mr 11. I’. I.a wry, S.M-, il he could conduct his own ease. A departmental plficer gave evidence to show that defendant had not registered his orchard, though fie had twice been notified. Then defendant got into the box and produced a certificate of registration, which proved that he had complied in every respect with the requirements. “ I'm afraid there has been some mistake in tbc office,” said the Department’s representative. “Case dismissed,” said the Magistrate.
Yesterdav was the tenth anniversary of the Hattie of Messincs, when the Second Army drove the German troops from the eastern wing of the Ypres salient and made possible the 'launching of the attacks toward Passchendaele, and the submarine bases at Ostend and Zeebrugge. The battle will go down to history as ; one in which meticulous attention was paid to detail. Preparations for the assault had to lie made in full view of the Germans nn the high ground around Messincs, ami the positions had to be carried by sliccr weight of men and armament. Kinni the German point of view the only surprise in the attack was the hour of assault. The general expectation was that it would he made on June 7th, and at that hour the New Zealanders, in the van of the attack, caught a Bavarian regiment in the middle of a relief.
A meeting of the Hokitika Beautifying Society was held at the County Chambers yesterday afternoon, Hon. H. L. Michel, President, presiding. The Treasurer, Mr Niven, reported the receipts since the Ist January had been fill Is Id, enabling arrears of debts to be paid off and all current liabilities met. The Chairman said the position was very satisfactory and their thanks were due to the .1 v.'.y. Club and Mrs H. IS. Preston for their help in the dance benefit. It was decided t fix March 17th (St. Patrick’s Day) for the annual benefit on Cass Square, and it was resolved to order a iresli supply of daylight fireworks from England for next year’s gala. Accounts to the amount of £ll 2s were passed for payment. and it was resolved to offer a contribution of £lO towards the gravelling of the Weld and Brittan Street footpaths round the outside of Cass Square if the Borough Council would undertake the work. The Chairman was deputed to wait on Mr A. Lawn with regard to organising a dance benefit at an early date in aid of the funds, the credit balance being reduced to £l4. General matters were discussed and the meeting adjourned sine die.

The Fire Brigade were neaylv called out last evening about !) o’clock, a telephone message being received Irom a subscriber stating that there was a fire in Fitzherbert. Street. I lie Superintendent was advised and found a stove-pipe chimney 0,1 lire, hut there was no danger and he was then surprised lo find that the brick chimney of the telephone subscriber who had laino up was blazing merrily. There was a good attendance at the weekly euchre assembly at the Soldiers’ Hall last evening, the annexe being crowded. Interesting play resulted and the scoring was close, there being several ties. After the playing off the results were: —M.iss Sumner first; Mrs Smith (Kokntahi) second; Mrs Reid third; Mrs Ingram- fourth ; Mrs Rliodda iilth; Mr Wanklyii sixth; .Mr Coraghcty, seventh; Mr I!. At the Magistrate’s Court, yesterday afternoon. Mr W. Mcl.clrunv, S.M.. was engaged lor three- hours heating a disputed claim by Hooch and Moore (Mr Murdoch) v. A. and J - Aarrall (Mr Joyce), a claim for £57 Bis. lot' extras in connection with a contract', for the erection of a residence lor defendants, who paid £4l 15s 9d and costs L'2 5s into court. Evidence was given for the plaintiffs by W. Hooch and S. Moore and for the j defendants It.v Mrs Yarrall. NY. Jeifrios .bricklayer), W. H. .Shannon, \V. Hoodlellow, and T. Kerr. His Worship in giving his decision said he had done his utmost tq follow the evidence on each item disputed, and weigh it on its merits. One item he rejected, that ol the preparation of plans £5 Ids and, the other main reduction was £2 Ids on another of the extras. Judgment would he given for plaintiff for £4O Is Id. with costs amounting to 07 14s, less the amount paid into court.
