At the meeting of the Hokitika Free Library on Tuesday night reference was made to tlie action of the Government in handing over the Provincial Council Chambers at Christchurch to Canterbury and Westland Provinces. Pleasure was expressed at the government remembering Westland’s part in the early pijgvincinl history. It was resolved to forward a letter of thanks and appreciation to Sir Francis D. Bell who made the announcement at Christchurch on behalf of the Government.

A record run of 439 miles in twentyfour hours was made by the Royal Mail liner Aorangi on her last trip from Auckland to Sydney. It is the greatest speed yet attained by the vessel since she was built, over three years ago, and is probably the fastest time made in one day by a merchant vessel in the Tasman Sea. The Aorangi was three days two hours forty-one minutes oil the trip, which is not a record, the Niagara having covered l the distance in three days twenty-three minutes.

Captain Buckley is wellknown on the West Coast, having been in charge of an Avro machine here, at the time of the Hokitika Exhibition.
