NOW IN FORCE
NEW MOTOR REGULATIONS. WELLINGTON, June 1
The new motor regulations have today come into force and if they are enforced to the letter of the man> clauses, many motorists are going to have impressed upon them the fact that new rules have taken the place of the old. Whether it is that motorists are not particularly discerning or whether, as they say, the regulations are confusing on many points, there are clauses which will probably give rise to considerable argument in places where breaches of regulations are as a rule debated, but there are three points which drivers should note and act upon. It is provided “every headlight attached to a motor vehicle shall he so focused and adjusted that when the vehicle is standing on a horizontal surface the main beam of light is not projected above the horizontal plane of the lamp nor projected to a height which, at a distance of 75 feet from the lamp, is more than 3ft 6in above such horizontal surface.” Most headlights must be dipiiod permanently to comply with this regulation. Another section reads: "On and after June Ist., 1928. no person shall, while a motor vehicle is m motion, cause or knowingly permit any headlight displayed by such vehicle to be displayed or extinguished or appreciably varied in brilliance in a sudden manner, whether by dimming or anv other means, provided that in any place within a borough or town district whore the street lighting is sufficient to render clearly visible a person, vehicle, or other substantial object at a distance of 150 feel, the drner of anv motor vehicle may dim the headlights thereof, or may use side lights in .substitution for headlights. ’ Clause 4 of the section dealing with equipment provides: “No person, shall operate any motor vehicle which is not equipped with a fixed red reflector fiffisd to rw thereof; 8!
