JUTLAND ANNIVERSARY. RUGBY, May 31
The anniversary of the Buttle of Jutland was commemorated at Portsmouth to-day. The Commander-in-Chief, Admiral Sir Osmond Brock, and the Mayor, placed wreaths at the naval war memorial and the city Cenotaph in memory of the 8648 officers and men of the Britsh Fleet who were killed in the engagement.
SIGNIFICANCE OF NEW FLAG RUGBY, May 31
The new South African flag was unfurled to-day by the side of the Union Jack over Parliament Buildings at Cape Town. The ceremony was performed by the Earl of Athlone, Governor-General. He referred to the Union Jack as an ancient flag, which had inspired more devotion, sacrifice and pride than any other flag in the world, while the other flag, he said, was something new in the world, and, for that reason, big with significance. Simultaneously in London, Prince Arthur of Connaught unfurled the new South African flag beside the Union Jack on South Africa House, in Trafalgar Square. Down in the square below a crowd of several hundred people cheered the new emblem.
