Some proceedings relating to the taking of opossums out of season are pending. The season does not open until next Monday, but consequent on reports the police are active suppressing the illicit taking of opossums.

The Lake Kanieri hatchery has been put in order for the season’s hatching, which will begin shortly. An annexe has been erected to take an additional quantity of quimiat ova to be forwarded by the Government, in charge of Mr C. L. Avson, from Hakataramea.

The 1 Monster Paddy’s Market held in the Soldiers’ Hall on Saturday was a great success, the financial results being very creditable. Throughout the day brisk business was done by the stall-holders, and when the market was concluded in the evening practically everything was cleared. The ladies concerned with tile function were highly delighted with the results and to them great praise is due for the success attained.

With the near approach of the session of Parliament, interest is being revived in the debatable question of “summer time” (says tho ‘‘•Church Gazette,” Auckland). So far as Evensong on Sundays last summer was concerned, the putting forward of the clock did not- seem to make any difference generally in the attendance of worshippers. One advantage noted was the saving At the charge for lighting owing to the evening service being held in tho sunshine. It is not likely that there will he any opposition to another trial of the reform next summer, so far as the churches are concerned.

The opposum trapping season opens next Monday. It is illegal to trap prior to. that time and offenders are liable to prosecution. In connection with the trapping and the ultimate payment of the royalty on the skins, the Department of Internal Affairs desires it to lie known finally that royalty shall be paid to the. nearest officer authorised to receive same in the Acclimatisation district in which the opossums were taken. Trappers and others concerned should note this, as the indulgence given last season of sending skins out of Westland without payment of royalty will not be repeated. All royalty will require to ho paid in this district to Air James Downs, Stamping Officer at tho Government Buildings, Hokitika.

There was a church parade of territorials and senior cadets on Sunday morning in honour of the King’s Birthday, a fairly good muster being present. The Municipal Band played the parade to and from the churches.

A fire has broken out in the Reeftori Coal Company’s mine, and owing to the smoko penetrating the workings, all the men have been withdrawn. Steps are being taken to cope with the outbreak.

There will lie a meeting of the Ladies’ Committee at the Soldiers’ Hall tomorrow (Wednesday) evening to make the necessary supper arrangements lor the Swimming Club’s Annual Ball and the Juvenile Ball.

A writ has been issued on behalf of Mr and Mrs Egan against the Westport Borough Counil, claiming £IOOO damages in connection with the death by electrocution of Peter Egan on February loth. last. The ease is set down for hearing at the next sitting of the Supreme Court to lie held at Westport on June 13th.

The popularity of the annual social dance of the Hokitika Bowling Club was again demonstrated last evening when there was another crowded attendance, the receipts being a record. Excellent music was provided by Ross’s Orchestra, the floor was in fine order, and Mr H. Davidson in charge kept the dancers tripping merrily. As usual the Ladies’ Committee provided a very dainty supper and the gathering passed off very enjoyably to a successful conclusion about two o’clock.

An accident occurred last evening on Omnto Road, near Quarry Hill, and the powder magazine. Mr Joseph Harper, of Brunner, was driving his Ford car homo from Greymoutli, after .attending a football match, with his wife and another man for passengers, when he encountered a car coming to town, and was temporarily blinded by its headlights. His car swerved ami struck a telegraph post, snapping it about eight feet above tlie ground, and damaging the radiator. The occupants had a very lucky escape. Telegraphic communication to the north was for a couple of hours interrupted by the snapping of the post.

While returning to Greymouth- from Dunollie on Saturday afternoon, Air W. L. Patterson, taxi proprietor, of Greymouth, met with a mishap on the road, which resulted in injury to his ear. .He had a full load of Soccer players aboard, and when coming down the hill between Dunollie and Runanga he had occasion to pass another car coining towards him. In endeavouring to do this, the car swung a little too far out, with the result that it went over the side of the road into the hushes below. Fortunately, neither the passengers nor Mr Patterson were injured, hut the car was damaged to some extent, mainly the wind-screen and hood.

The hall to lie given by local bachelors on Wednesday, June 27t1i., promises to he a great success. Messrs Paine, Bleach and McGeorge will lie in charge of the coloured lighting effects. The decorations' will be in the batchelors’ colour—yellow, and will be attended to by Messrs Dawson, Renton and Lodge; and a special band will provide the latest music. It is expected that several local bachelors as yet permanently uncharmed will begin their life long romances on that night.
