-MOTOR, KNOCKS DOWN MAN. CHRISTCHURCH, May 31. William Saunders, of Riecarton. was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital this afternoon, suffering from a fracture of the right anil and severe head injuries, as the result of being knocked down by a motor car on Riecarton Road. Saunders, suffering from shock, was admitted in a serious condition. TAXATION RETURNS.’ DUNEDIN. May 31.
Customs returns for May amount to £63,099 0s 7d, as compared with £61,223 -Is Id for the corresponding month of last year. Beer duty for the month is £17,592 1-ls 7d. as against £21.016 19s lid for May of last year. Motor spirit tax for this mouth totals £3057 Is Sd, and the tyre tax comes to £1768 ss.

Following are the Dunedin vital statistics for the month ended to-day (the figures for the corresponding period of last year being given in parentheses): Births 123 (129); marriages, 48 (52); deaths, 64 (97).
For the five months ended May 31, the figures were : —Births 571 (669) ; marriages, 288 (312); death?, 323 (380).
