The Hokitika Gas Company is certainly one of the local institutions of which the community should he proud. The Company has lieen in existence now for over 54 years, and during that term has been associated very intimately with the life of the town. In that period it has rendered faithful and useful service to those concerned, and has become now something indispensible in the life of the people by reason of the fact that gas is now such a commodity for general utility purposes.. Of late the Company has taken on a renewed lease of life and bids fair to go pn with iqcpeftsed and, more
useful service to the town as a whole. The demand for gas locally appears to ho on the increase, a,iul tho past year has witnessed a record si poly, 'lo meet the demands tlie Company has been extending and receiving its plant. Alueli of the machinery h been renewed and lately the important stop was token of replacing the gas holder, or rather supplanting the holder hitherto in use. The now holder which was seen inflated this week, lias nearly three times the capacity of the holder hitherto used since the inception of tho Company. AA itli the increase in the local consumption, there has been at times anxiety in keeping up tho supply of gas, but that will now bo removed once the new holder is brought into action. Tho Company should therefore be in a fair way of enjoying another long period of usefulness, with resources equal to all probable requirements for some time to come. This enterprise on the part of the Company is to he commended. It means that the amenities of home life are possible of the fullest cultivation, for gas with the modern appliances may now he used and utilised for so many purposes. It is rather remarkable the way gas lias become adaptable of late for any purpose where heat is required. Scientific resource has so improved appliances and methods that excellent results are now obtainable very economically, and the result is added pleasure to life. In the years of existence of tho local service, the sappy of gas has never been interrupted. AA’hen gas was first installed here it came into use as a very necessary service for lighting. Its uses in that respect have been challenged by electric light, hut gas lias so many other uses that it is not likely ever to lie a hack number, and the fact that- the local consumption is a substantially growing quantity, despite the competition. is the answer complete to its future use. The Company from now on will he h-ettcr able than ever to discharge its prescribed service to the community, and no doubt the measure of its profitable success in the future will ho gauged by the greater service now at the disposal of the community, and the Company should prosper greal-
