EXPRESS HOLD-UP.

XEAV YORK, April 14

Passengers who travelled last night by the Overland Limited, the famous express train running from Chicago to the Pacific Coast, made the acquaintance of a highly enterprising modem highwayman. Scarcely had the train left tlie North-Western station than a man wearing a cloth mask appeared in the observation coach, flourishing a revolver and shouting, “Hands up!’ He herded a dozen or more men and women oil to the platform at the end of tho train and took their handbags, purses, watches, l'ing-s, and othei jewellery. Having secured £I,OOO in cash and many valuables, lie pulled the emeigency cord. The train. whic-Ii had attained a speed of 40 miles an hour, halted, and the modern Dick Turpin vaulted over ’the railings of the platform and disappeared in the darkness in tho outskirts of Chicago. His victims, including several bankers and politicians, rushed into the Pullman coaches ahead, shouting " A hold-up!” Mail and parcel post guards seized their machine guns, expecting a wholesale attack by robbers. But there was only one robber, and lie had disappeared, so the train proceeded on its way.
