AFRICAN FLAG. CAPETOWN, May 29
The National Flag ol the Union is to be inaugurated on Thursday. During the past fortnight, a strong, feeling has been growing up throughout the Union by the Government’s interpretation of the act, particularly regarding the (lying of both Union Jack and National Flag at particular centres. At the pre-eminently Dutch-speaking towns and villages in the old republics only the national flag will he flown, except in provincial capitals, where both Hags will on the principal buildings. 11l a number of small towns in the eastern part of Capo Province the Government’s decision to fly only the national Hag is occasioning deep resentment, hut the strongest feeling of all lias lieen aroused in Capetown., owing to the refusal to fly the Union Jack at Capetown Castle, which for two hundred and fifty years lias been niiivorsallv regarded as the chief building in t’ue'cite" Mr Hert/og influenced, it is believed, by Dr Malam, refuses to make concession to strong expressions of public opinion on this point, and to : da v refused to meet an influential ue legation of ex-servicemen in that comic* tion. The effect of this grudging attitude is most unfortunate. The two English-speaking peoples were undoubtedly readv to unite in the celebrations, but are now regarding the situation resentfully.
